IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue

Shaping up to geometric design
It is probably the most difficult design form to define since in many ways it underpins the entire discipline. But one thing it is not, in the hands of our 10 featured practitioners, is cold and calculating. They each explain how geometry shaped their design world – and why they feel so passionately about it. And their selected artwork helps to square the circle.

Featuring/

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p52-53

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p54-55

At the age of only 24, Iceland’s Siggi Eggertsson has already produced a body of work that is truly impressive. It has been described as work that “relies on geometry and symmetry, fusing curvilinear shapes into pixilated, cleverly impressionistic jigsaw puzzles”.

"Grids and geometry are the glue that holds my work together. It keeps everything in order.”

Steven Harrington

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p40-41

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p42-43

Harrington lives and works in Los Angeles, and aside from co-owning and operating National Forest Design, he continues to work on both commissioned and personal art projects.

“[People tend to think that geometric design] is just a very logical way of connecting forms, but when you are really working with it, it becomes an interesting adjudication and a very interesting approach.”

Yokoland

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p66-67

Yokoland, started by Espen Friberg and Aslak Gurholt Rønsen and based in Oslo, Norway, mainly focuses on print-based projects such as books, magazines, posters, record covers, CD and DVD covers.

“Graphic design can at times be geometric. Geometry doesn’t necessarily make it graphic design.”

Felice Varini

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p62-63

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p64-65

If only one word was allowed to describe the work of Swiss artist Felice Varini, you would probably opt for “perspective”.

“I am not fascinated by geometry per se, it’s the simplicity of the forms — circles, triangles, squares, lines — that I retain as being the most efficient in the space."

Melvin Galapon

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p58-59

Born in the South of England in 1981, Galapon was faced with a dilemma before he committed himself to geometric design. Architecture was his first pick when he entered college, but he hadn’t realised that physics was a course requirement.

“I think geometric work lends itself well to graphics, as they are the simplest of forms you can create and use to create complex forms.”

Fanette Mellier

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p60-61

Mellier’s work is often described as modular and multi-faceted, and it comes in a variety of colours or in basic black, with a rather nifty set of punctuation that ties in with the geometric shapes that make up her custom display typefaces.

“I like using geometry to design letters because it implies a game and unlimited combinations."

Benoît Bodhuin

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p56-57

Benoît Bodhuin is the only designer featured in this article who formally studied mathematics, before he decided to turn his back on the discipline and take up graphics instead, at the Institut St-Luc in Tournai, Belgium.

"My vision of design was formed by my studies and it’s very natural that the geometrical aspects should have influenced me: structure, patterns, typography ....”

Niessen & de Vries

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p74-75

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p76-77

Niessen & de Vries is the name of a design studio founded by Dutch couple Richard Niessen and Esther de Vries in 2005. Before they worked as duo, they had worked together on various projects with a bunch of their friends who are also graphic designers.

“It's about the building bricks of our works – as long as they are simple and geometric, we can easily work with them."

Maya Hayuk

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p46-47

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p48-49

Raised by Ukrainian immigrant parents in a suburb of Baltimore, US, Hayuk first got to know about geometry through Ukrainian crafts that had been passed down through the generations.

“I think of geometry as part of the framework of the universe. The maths that's in everything is why and how everything works."

Vaughan Ward

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p68-69

IdN v15n5: The Geometric Issue p70-71

A recent graphic-design graduate from the University of Brighton, Vaughan Ward first fell in love with geometry when he discovered the legendary Josef Müller-Brockmann.

“The basis of all great graphic design relies on geometry, from a six-column grid to a typeface grid. Geometry offers the boundaries for graphic design to break..”
