The Royal College of Art

“There's a great deal of primitivism in the large pieces of paper torn, ripped, cut and assembled, covering the bodies, writing with big brushes and bold black ink. The process itself is full of movement.”

NAM

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.50-51

“A fantasy in life” is the mission of this Japanese group of artists, who are continuously searching for the possibilities in the world of visual arts that can bring about this ideal. The group presently comprises some 10 artists from various backgrounds.

“Our creativity is always based on one big rule: creating visual arts using common objects. It’s like always experimenting with something from a different point of view. We think that even fallen leaves have artistic possibilities if we look at them carefully.”

"We think that analogue and digital methods can co-exist and that they can even mix and create something of their own. The intersections of different disciplines are always the most fascinating."

Hort

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.42-43

Eike Koenig always wanted to work in an office that embodied the ideals of the kindergarten, but after a few trial-and-error experiences with various companies that didn’t share his attitude to working, he realised that he would have to establish his own workplace.

Eike Koenig

“Hort is an Old German word for kindergarten. A place where children play, learn things about life and the meaning of living in a society and, in addition to that, a place where they are safe and people take care of them. Kids learn by playing. And they start playing when they feel safe.”

Grégoire Alexandre

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.38-39

Normandy-born Grégoire Alexandre, now stationed in Paris. Cinema was his first interest, but he became more comfortable with photography since it gave him a greater sense of control and allowed him to take something out of reality without having to set it up first.

""Craft" integrates the possibilities and the limits of the medium, without using the computer to create impossible situations. I like my installations to be abstract but still possible."

Kate Gibb

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.34-35

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.36-37

Kate Gibb originally studied textiles at Middlesex University, but after graduation she decided to focus on the development of the silkscreen process on paper, rather than fabric.

“If the colour is right, the rest will follow. I notice and collect things because of their colour. It forms a big part of my memory. The kind of silkscreen printing I’m inspired by relies on chance, hiccups and accidents to provide the individual qualities that make up each piece.”

“I create elements by hand then take a digital image into an application on the computer to enhance it further. By doing this you can change elements and add effects in a way that wouldn’t have been possible by hand. This way of working can take the project to a completely new level that you might not have previously conceived."

IWant

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.24-25

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.26-27

Gilsenan graduated with a BA (hons) in fine art, after spending a couple of years working in record shops and DJing, he first designed flyers for club nights he promoted and record sleeves for the band he played with. After gaining experience in this way, he landed his first proper job at an agency – and met Bruce Allaway, now his partner at Iwant.

“I think of graphic design in some ways as an extravagance or a luxury. Other forms of design are a necessity or perform a function; we took away the space so that it was more like I WANT!"

Julien Vallée

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.20-21

IdN V16N1 the craft issue P.22-23

Montréal-born graphic designer Julien Vallée’s works tends to be described as treading a “fine line” between design and illustration. His work generally contains some characteristic features — many of them the result of a combination of craft, collage and computer graphics.

“I like to use manual art well endorsed by the various technological tools available in order to make the bridge between manual and virtual art. I think I fell in love with design when I realised that image and concept were a great combination to communicate a message.”
